This course examines video game graphics and game engines, covering their history, evolution, and role in creating immersive digital experiences.
Participants begin by exploring graphics technology, including 2D and 3D graphics. They learn about various artistic styles like pixel art, hand-drawn designs, and photorealistic imagery. The course also highlights the impact of emerging technologies such as real-time ray tracing, AI, and VR/AR on the gaming industry. Practical exercises allow participants to compare graphical advancements between classic and contemporary games.
The second focus is on game engines, software frameworks enabling efficient game creation. Students delve into the history of game engines, from early hardcoded games to modern engines like Unity, Unreal, and Godot. They learn about engine features, including rendering, AI, physics simulations, and networking, gaining insights into how these tools streamline development and foster creativity.
The practical component includes guided experiments with user-friendly engines such as Construct3 and GDevelop, allowing participants to create basic games without coding. Advanced learners explore Unity for more complex projects. Ethical considerations and the importance of optimization for performance and accessibility are also emphasized, promoting inclusive and eco-friendly game design.
